With this is bound Epistola ad Godofredum Guilielmum Leibnitium, qua characterem plantarum naturalem non a partibus earum peti posse ostendit by Johann Heinrich Burckhard, published Helmstadii, 1750. a reprint of his 1702 publication where Burckhard and Leibniz had developed some ideas, well before Linnaeus, regarding the sexual organs of plants. This edition contains a 98-page introduction by Laurentius Heister before the reprint (pp. [101]-159) with a 15-page index. The subjects in this volume are fruits, spices, herbs, hallucinogenics, poisons, cereals, bulbs, ferns, mushrooms, etc. Plant names in German and Latin in the plate.Artus's handbook of general medicinal-pharmaceutical plants was published in two volumes from 1846 to 1885. With title page to the 5th edition of 1876, 395 pages of text (p.363 to p.758) and 110 hand-coloured botanical engravings.Willibald Artus (1809-1880) was a pharmacist in Weimar, before moving to Jena in 1840 to become professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the university.Brown half leather binding with crack at front hinge, gilt title on spine, marble boards scuffed and worn, text pages starting to brown as usual, hand-coloured plates with some toning and occasional foxing. A few pages starting to come loose from the binding, some chipped at the edges.

LONDON : John White, 1807 A very good copy of Rousseau's Letters translated and explained by Professor Thomas Martyn, 7th corrected and improved edition bound with Thirty-Eight plates, also by Thomas Martyn, 1794. In newer half leather binding with title label to spine and marbled boards. Page edges marbled. Letters is 503 pp plus index sections, with folding table outlining Linnaeus' system. The Thiry-Eight plates, a complete work in itself with separate title page, but prepared to link with the Letters, is 72 pp with 38 beautiful hand coloured plates by Nodder. The binding is in very good condition with a little scuffing to the spine. The contents are generally in very good condition with nice clean text pages. The plates are clean and brightly coloured. There is a small stain which affects the bottom left hand corner of plates 36-8, not affecting images.

Publisher's original printed blue wraps. Light wear to spines. Inscribed to half title pages of both volumes by author to "Dr. G. Tomayo/with friendly regards" dated 7/8/65. A nice, clean set without further markings. COLLATES COMPLETE with 48 uncolored plates. Hardcover bound in original green publisher's cloth. Moderate rubbing and wear to the binding. The corners are a little bumped, and there is some pale spotting along the fore edges and top edge of the binding. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Prior owner's 1954 inscription on the front flyleaf of "William Lanier Hunt" INSCRIBED on the title page, "From the Author." The text is a little toned but generally clean. There is some offsetting from the plates. Contains 48 uncolored plates. William Lanier Hunt (1906-1996), the 1950s owner, was the "Dean of Southern Horticulture." He donated land along the Morgan Creek in southern Orange County, NC to the North Carolina Botanical Garden and is now known as the Hunt Arboretum.
