Philadelphia: J.T. Bowen, 1838. Folio. (13 4/8 x 9 6/8 inches). 24 lithographed plates, including four panoramic views (some browning some minor spotting). Original maroon cloth, maroon morocco lettering-piece in the centre of the front cover (rebacked at an early stage preserving most of the original spine); modern red cloth clamshell box. Provenance: With the engraved bookplate of Joseph Y Jeanes of Philadelphia on the front paste-down. First collected edition, later issue with Bowen imprint rather than Chevalier, originally published in parts: "Wild broke wholly new ground in American prints. Single views of cities from a distant vantage point were usual, but showing a whole city as it appeared in facing each point of the compass from a central spot was an innovation" (Snyder). The first four plates compose the panorama of Philadelphia as viewed from just above the rooftops. Other views include: Fairmount from the Basin, View from the Inclined Plane, Market Street, Manayunk, and Laurel Hill Cemetary. Howes W410 "c"; Sabin 103971; Snyder, "J. C. Wild and His Philadelphia Views" in PMHB vol. 77, no. 1; Wainwright 264-267. 6.4B.3E.

Description:
Very Good. Set of six mounted albumens depicting artwork of early Cincinnati, Ohio by artist John Casper Wild. We believe the photographer of these images is James Landy, of Landy Photo, Cincinnati, although no imprint is present. Likely taken around 1880s. All albumens are on original mounts which measure 15" x 17 ¾"; albumens measure 10" x 13 ½". All are identified in pencil on mounts; no content on verso. Also included in this set is a 5"x7" sepia-toned photo print of one of the albumens and two color lithographs published by the Cincinnati Historical Society in the late 1960s. Mounts have moderate soiling and light wear; original mounts are affixed to modern cardstock mounts; a couple of the albumens have minor soiling and all have light yellowing. Overall very good. John Caspar Wild (1804-1846) was the artist of the original watercolors depicted in these photographs. He was born in Switzerland, lived in Paris for 15 years and came to… Read More
