Glossy black coated cloth, titles and rules in red on the cover and spine. Laid paper, top edge trimmed. NY bookseller tag on back endpaper. In the printed dust jacket, unclipped. Rectangular offset stains on the free endpapers, spine ends lightly rubbed, top edge dust. Leaves mildly age-toned. Jacket edges rubbed. Written soon after MacLeish's return to the US from France, in the midst of the Great Depression. The original production (and last until 1980) featured Orson Welles in his first leading performance. Dust jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.

Archibald MacLeish was not only a well-known poet but also served as Librarian of Congress, appointed by Franklin Roosevelt, a position he used to reorganize and promote the institution. In addition to winning three Pulitzer Prizes, MacLeish was commissioned by the NEW YORK TIMES to write a poem to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing, which he entitled "Voyage to the Moon" and which appeared on the front page of the 21 July 1969 edition of the paper.
