Description:
London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings. The binder has introduced a new front blank and has probably misbound the Introduction, which should… Read More

Cambridge: R. Walker & T. James, 1745. Two Volumes, first thus. This is the two volume re-issue of this work by Walker, in 1745. It was longer than the earlier edition (extending to 1234 pages rather than 1109), but it was not issued with the engravings. This copy conforms to ESTC T154531 with pages up to Y4 the same as the earlier issue, those after differing. In this copy, Y4 is not a cancel. Half contemporary leather bindings, with marbled boards (now significantly faded) gilt volume number but no titles to each spine. Leather is a little cracked, but binding is holding well. Vol. 1 has a modern cutting with a portrait of Cromwell pasted to the inside front board. Title page is a little darkened. Rest of the work is in good clean condition, with a few pages a little dirty. To volume II, the rear paste down is covered in pencil page references. The last text page has a repaired tear, with a corner of loss (not affecting text.). (viii) 1-716, 721-1234. pp. 110 by 170mm (4¼ by 6¾ inches).

Thomas Tryon (1634-1703) , who had at various times in his life worked as a shepherd and a hatter, was greatly influenced by the writings of Behmen. It was a result of his familiarity with Behmen's work that Tryon adopted a lifestyle of self-denial. In his words, "My drink was only water, and food only bread and some fruit. But afterwards I had more liberty given me by my guide, Wisdom, viz. to eat butter and cheese. My clothing was mean and thin, for in all things self-denial was now become my real business. Description:
London: Liberal Publication Department, 1904. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This Bound volume contains Liberal Leaflet No. 1923 entitled "Tory M.P.s on Mr. Brodrick's Army Corps Scheme. The pamphlet is 4 pages in length and contains two excerpts from Churchill's House of Commons Speech of 24 February 1903 - the last of his famous six oratorical assaults on Brodrick's plan to expand the Army. In 1903 Winston Churchill was a brash new member of Parliament. Then Secretary of State for War, John Brodrick, had introduced a plan for expanding the peacetime Army. Brodrick was a fellow Conservative and Cabinet member. Churchill had been an Army officer and had partaken in four wars on three continents before election to Parliament in 1900. Nonetheless, Churchill vehemently assaulted Brodrick's plan. Fascinatingly, this was the same fight upon which Churchill's father, Lord Randolph Churchill, had gambled and lost his own political career in 1886. Unlike that of his father, Churchill's opposition ultimately… Read More

Publisher's DELUXE BINDING of leather-backed dark green boards with extra gilt decoration to spine, tan endpapers, edges marbled (the standard binding was mid-green cloth. Contents clean, joints slightly rubbed. Near fine. This early tale of adventure is WSC's only short story, and together with the novel 'Savrola' constitutes Churchill's entire fictional oeuvre. The story did not reappear until after the author's death, (June 1965, 'The Argosy'), nearly seven decades after the first publication. This issue also contains the short story 'A Princess In Green and Tan' by Arthur Preston, featuring six illustrations from a young Arthur Rackham, drawn very much in the popular Sidney Paget (Sherlock Holmes) style, familiar to readers of the rival 'Strand Magazine', as well as two stories by Richard Marsh.
