New York: Grove Press, (1953). First U.S. edition of the Nigerian author's first and best-known book. Based in part on old, local Yoruba folk-tales. Praised by Dylan Thomas as "brief, thronged, grisly and bewitching" (dust jacket flap), it was written in English and first published in London in 1952. 8vo green cloth-backed orange paper boards; spine lettered in white and yellow; small, yellow palm-tree ornament on front; 130 pages including the author's brief (5-page) autobiography, "My Life and Activities"; illustrated with one-page of facsimile manuscript. Near fine with few tiny dings to upper board edges and small, light stain to bottom edge of text block; in about very good dust jacket with rubbing to base of spine and spine folds, two tiny chips, few small tears, spine and edges lightly tanned, and faint stain at spine. With publisher's review slip indicating September 12th publication date laid in.
