Susan Allix, a British book artist, has her own press and creates handmade books using a variety of fine papers and textures with letterpress printing and embossing. One of her works was selected for the exhibit "Bookmarking Book Art", held at the Grosvenor Rare Book Room.
This work, "Palm Tree Sketch Book", contains a collection of 14 palm tree images inspired by sketches taken from distant locations, with text that provides a descriptive title to each tree. As stated in the prospectus: "[t]his is a concertina of palm trees. As a sketchbook it contains no particular narrative, but each palm describes itself and is described by its own title...[c]oloured tissues and mounts interleave pages supported by boards covered in green abaca...[t]he front continues the concertina effect with a folded palm tree image."
___DESCRIPTION: Artist book designed accordion-style, bound with a folded front board using green suede and Abaca paper, contains 14 images of palm trees in etching, relief print and reproduced drawing and photography; printed in Spartan on Somerset paper, 12 mo size (6.75" tall), 14 pages, limited edition of 25, this no. 12. Enclosed in an artist envelope of cardstock with a mylar wrap, image of a palm tree on the front, the flap being of green paper. The prospectus is in the form of a small notecard (6" by 4.5"), the sketch of a palm tree and black lettering on the front, inside on the right side is the prospectus printed on a three-panel down-folding cardstock mounted over a leaf of green abaca.

Printed in 18 pt Centaur. 17 x 11 cms, bound in blue stiff wrappers with paste paper endpapers, printed label on upper cover, held in a bright blue wire and card clasp, housed in the original cloth and paste paper portfolio box.||Sudden Blue is a book that celebrates blue; how colour can inform memory and recollection. The starting point was two lines from a poem called Sudden Light by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and these are printed as a prelude in the book. They are followed by a Venetian inspired series of pages in colours from deep ultramarine to pale turquoise. Bound by the artist in a yellow leather spine and purple and batik paper over boards which have been stencilled in green, pink and yellow resin lacquer and onlaid with yellow and green lines. The title printed in green on the upper board. The book is enclosed in a cage made of cream paper-pulp in a random, open-work texture. Housed in a raspberry red folding case with a yellow leather fastening.||Five delightful and irresistible things are described, with prints, and shut up inside a paper cage. Of the twenty-five copies, Copy Number 1 had paintings, copies 2-15 had original etchings based on the paintings, and copies xvi to xxv had reproductions made from the etchings or paintings. This is Copy no. xxiii. Signed by Susan Allix. Purple, yellow and cream-colored wrappers, stitched at spine in yellow. In acetate and cream-colored board covers. . Quarto. Six color etchings accompanied by a descriptive passage or story printed by letterpress in 14pt. Baskerville. Paper for text and etchings is Saunders Waterford. A fine copy. Two incidents led to the making of this book. One was the opportunity to observe the miniature painters of Udaipur and to obtain some of their original pigments for painting, and the other was the strange story told by the man on the train to Bharatpur" (Susan Allix).

Contained in a cloth and paper envelope. Signed by Allix on the colophon. The book is letterpress in two fat face types. The principal typeface is 36pt Braggadocio which was designed in 1930 by W.A.Woolley for the Stephenson Blake type foundry. Some of the letterforms are startling in their weight, brevity, and the use of curve against straight. It is combined with Bodoni Ultra Bold, released in 1928 and designed by Morris Fuller Benton. "This book takes a wry look at seven ladies who are not of the slenderest proportions, accompanied by short quotations by George Eliot, Edith Wharton, and Marilyn Monroe.
