Marbled end pages and front and rear as well as gilt decoration on leather edges of pastedowns. Edges of exterior spine show wear with top edge chipping. Contains high quality steel engravings, illustrated on steel and wood from original drawings. First edition, showing the date 1861 on both copyright and title page. Book interior condition is VG+, pages are toned of the below foxing is present and there are no signatures or bookplates. Unfortunately, front cover detached itself when we were inspecting the book for photographing. Because of this we have lowered the condition down to fair. See photos.

Book is bound in brown, tooled leather with gilt lettering on both front and back covers as well as the spine. The spine has five raised ridges. The front cover has some looseness and there are a number of worn away areas on both covers as well as spine. Corners are bumped. There are marbled pages inside front and back covers. Illustrated on steel and wood, from original drawings. The text block is gilt on all three sides. Interior pages are clean, clear and complete. Book is heavy and extra shipping may be required.

Illustrated throughout with forty steel engravings, seven wood engravings, and 120 head and tail vignettes, many by F.O.C. Darley. Illustrated title-page and frontispiece portrait of Cooper. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8 1/4"); in the publisher's full brown morocco binding with an elaborate border stamped in blind to the upper and lower boards, and titling in gilt; raised bands with blind stamping in compartments and titling lettered in gilt; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers; there is the beginning of separation (about 1/2") at the top and bottom of the front gutter, though the boards are holding quite well; with 40 steel engravings, including the frontispiece and vignette title page, all protected with tissue guards; there are also vignette engravings on wood. Several leaves have minor off-setting from now removed leaves. ~~Overall, a nice copy of a handsome book. Beautifully illustrated excerpts from Cooper's writings. Very Good binding.
