T. Fisher Unwin, London. First Edition. Hardcover (Vellum). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Daniel Vierge. QUEVEDO-VILLEGAS, FRANCISCO DE. Pablo de Segovia, The Spanish Sharper, London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1892. Folio, first English edition (came 10 years after the first Paris edition), pp. xlii, 239, vellum boards with red morocco labels on spine, gravure frontispiece showing the author, 110 drawings by Daniel Vierge, all edges tinted red, former owner's ID on free front endpaper. A picaresque novel now valued chiefly for the work of Vierge, who was born in Spain but moved to France and became a leading illustrator. Joseph Pennell, in his intro here, explains why this is the better edition: Vierge became paralyzed while working on the first edition and so it was printed with only 90 drawings, leaving the final pages un-illustrated. In the interim between the French and English editions, Vierge, unable to use his drawing hand (the right), taught himself to draw with his left, adding the final 20 illustrations here. By the way, the production process Vierge and his engraver used here were revolutionary for their time, allowing drawing to be printed with text on one plate. Gordon Ray, in The Art of the French Illustrated Book (Dover), p. 390, calls Vierge "one of the Masters of the French tradition." Ray 296 describes a 1902 edition that Vierge created because he was unhappy with the previous two. Only 440 copies were printed. Condition of this book: Vellum soiled, bowing slightly, short tear at head of spine. Scattered light foxing inside, frontis tissue guard is missing a small chunk, as are a couple endpages (looks like insect damage). Overall good and sound. This is the first UK edition. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Illustrator: Daniel Vierge. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; 19th century; Art & Design. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 53675. .
