About This Item
(N.p.: Janus Press, 1980. Van Vliet, Claire. Small octavo. (vi), 45, (2)pp. Inscribed twice by the author. The first book of the Janus Press, with a frontispiece woodcut and two additional cuts by Claire Van Vliet, whose imagery adopts a classical motif to echo the highbrow sentiments of Theobald's verses. A promising start, displaying the artistic potential of the now-acclaimed Press. Saddle-stitched in wrappers, sunned at edges. Acid from errata slips offset to pages, some creasing at spine, else near fine. Accompanied by a broadside celebrating the 35th anniversary of the first publication of the Press, printed likewise by Claire Van Vliet in 1980 as one of 200 copies and signed by both Van Vliet and Theobald. Paired with the publication, the broadside displays the evolution of Van Vliet's eye for stirring colors and precise printing. Framed. (17 1/4 by 12 3/4 in.).
