These are 'Coloré à la Main' and ‘Sur Blanc' impressions. Coloré à la Main and Sur Blanc impressions were published by both Le Charivari and La Caricature. Printed in small numbers, these impressions were individually published on a heavier and superior, wove paper, and are without the publication's usual text on the verso. They are signed in the stone by Pruche to the lower left, and contains the publication and printer's details, "Chez Bauger et Cie. R. du Croissant No. 16", "Chez Aubert, Pl. de la Bourse.", "Imp. d'Aubert & Cie" in the lower margin.
These are fine and exceptionally rare original examples of the satirical art created by the French artist, Clement Pruche.

Clément Pruche (1811-1890). Born in Paris, he was a French painter, draftsman, lithographer & caricaturist, active between 1831 and 1870. Pruche studied art techniques under the great master, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). He developed a reputation for both his genre scenes and caricatures. He began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon in 1834 and was an annual participant there until 1870. During 'The Golden Age of French Satirical Art (1830 to 1850)', Pruche created many lithographs for such leading publications as Le Charivari and La Caricature. These included such series as Caricatures du jour, Les chemins de fer, Les desagrements de Paris, Les domestiques, enfantillages, Inconxenients des voitures publiques, Mesaventures comiques, Les ouvriers de Paris, Les sep. peches capitaux, Les Petits metiers and Pochades de Carnaval. In style and arrangement Pruche's lithographic art has drawn comparison to such diverse practitioners as Honore Daumier, Cham and even Raffet. Perhaps Clement Pruchet's best known lithograph dates from 1841, in which members of the jury appointed for designing the tomb of Napoleon are reduced to common objects that signify their dotage and uselessness. His bookseller-publishers and distributors of his Parisian prints were Bauger (16, rue du Croissant), or Aubert, Galerie Véro-Dodat, who published his Petits Tableaux de la Vie Parisienne (Small Paintings of Parisian Life). In 1844, the Parisian publisher Alphonse Desesserts published Voyage au pays du Bonheur (Journey to the Land of Happiness) a work intended for young people which he composed with James and illustrated with thirty lithographs.

The Golden Age of French satirical art is generally held to be the era from 1830 to 1850. Founded by the great writer and editor, Charles Philipon (1804-1862), Le Charivari commenced its daily publication in 1832. By means of both its art and commentaries this journal led the attack upon France's political leaders, royalty, priesthood, and any other possibly corrupt individuals. Artists Philipon commissioned for satirical lithographs included such masters as Daumier, Gavarni Pruche and Travies. Many more great artists, however, contributed original lithographs to the publication which today comprise a wonderful resource of French life and humor from this long past age.
