Philadelphia: T.B. Peterson and Brothers, 1865. Hardcover, small volume bound in original blindstamped dark brown cloth, with "Peterson / Uniform / Duodecimo Edition / of the / Complete Works / of / Charles / Dickens / "Boz"" on front board. 2 vols. in one [complete], with spine so labeled in gold and title and author also in gold, including standing figure of a man. 932 pages, numbered consecutively, with brief publisher's catalogue appended at rear. Previous owner's name on first blank prelim. Yellow end-papers clean and unmarked. The 'People's American Edition.' Illustrated with 2 full page engravings at front. A very early American issue of Our Mutual Friend. Not listed in Podeshi, which lists only the 'Author's American Edition', published in two volumes. This edition appears to be a "cheap" edition, common at the time, due to the lack of Stone's illustrations and the combining of two volumes into one. Coincident with the publication of the two volume Peterson edition, as well as the Harper edition of the same year. Minor scuffing to boards, else a very clean, unmarked copy with bright spine lettering. A nice copy of a scarce American imprint Very good. . First Thus. Hardcover.
