Illustrator: Illustrated. 1.3 kg.; (4) V-XXVIII, 29-715 pages (3) publishers' preface, names of authors with a list of this subject, list of "Our Famous Women", list of portraits and illustrations. Pale green floral decorated endpapers. The text is illustrated with 47 black-and-white illustrations throughout the text. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with self embossed decoration to the front panel and gilt embossed titles to the front panel and gilt titles and decoration to the backstrip. Heavy bumping, rubbing and fraying to the backstrip edges and book corners. Underlying board is visible to the book corners. Heavy rubbing, fading and marking to the book panels and backstrip. Browning and foxing to the text block edges and internal text. Staining to the endpapers and the result of insect activity can be seen to the endpaper through to the title page. The front hinge has cracked and the underlying webbing is very visible. In this book famous 19th-century American women write on their contemporaries; for example Harriet Beecher Stowe writes on Catherine E. Beecher and Susan Coolidge writes on Lydia Maria Child. In all, 30 women are written about. The full title page is " Our Famous Women. An Authorised and Complete Record of the Lives and Deeds of Eminent Women of Our Times. Giving for the First Time the Life History of Women Who Have Won Me Away from Poverty and Obscurity to Fame and Glory. Replete with anecdotes, throwing incidents, and reminiscences.
