Light dampstains in cloth. Overall very good. An attempt to show "as many distinct types of the colonial architecture of New England as possible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation" (Preface). The text is a curious combination of anecdote and documentary history. Drake discusses twenty houses, all but three of which are in Massachusetts. HITCHCOCK 373

All gilt edges, which are still very bright. Some light bumping and rubbing to covers. Tiny bit of sticker residue on front end paper. No DJ as issued. On a front page there is a tidy inscription, appears to be written with a fountain pen, dated 1895. Pages are clean and tight; illustrated with 41 b/w photographs. Drake was a prolific author.
