First printing, quarto size, 38 pp. William Pène du Bois' (1916-1993) demonstrates his expertise in both writing and illustrating in this charming volume; Pène du Bois won the Newbery Medal for "The Twenty-One Balloons" in 1948, and, for books he illustrated, he was the runner-up for the Caldecott Medal twice. Pène du Bois brings a delightful visual interpretation to stories of imaginative, far-off lands, with elements of science mixed with the fantasy.

___DESCRIPTION: Full yellow cloth, white decoration in the shape of a sun on the front board, red lettering on the spine, decorative endpapers in blue, white, red and gold, title page in full colour with an illustration of a horn and drum, illustrations on every page, some in full colour, some in yellow and black, by Pène du Bois throughout; quarto size (10" by 7"), pagination: [1-13] 14-35 [36-38]. In a red paper dust jacket with colour illustrations on the front and rear panels, white lettering on the front panel, black and white lettering on the spine, a description of the book with colour illustration on the front flap, and a description of other books in the "Otto" series on the rear flap; the dust jacket is unclipped with the original price of $2.50 on the front flap.

___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a few small spots of soiling to the front board, else fine. The dust jacket is better than very good, unclipped, clean with bright colours, spine somewhat sunned, light edge wear to the head and tail of the spine and corners including a small chip out of the top of the back panel near the spine, a small (one-inch) closed tear to the bottom of the rear panel, and light toning and off-setting to the verso of the jacket, .
