About This Item

San Francisco & Los Angeles: Fred Hartsook, circa [1914]., [1914].. Very good. - An original 8-3/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide matte finish black & white photograph by the American celebrity photographer Fred Hartsook. The image portrays the young Dorothy Gish seated in front of a smoky studio background with fog rising from a lake. The young actress is attired in a formal white gown with a corsage. Her hands demurely rest in her lap. Signed diagonally "Sincerely / Dorothy E. Gish" in black ink within the flowing white gown. The photographer's signature is printed at lower left of the image. There is a very light vertical crease along the top. The portrait is mounted within a double mat with archival tape along the top and bottom edges of the verso. There are stains on the verso from earlier tape along the top corners and center of the bottom edge. A beautiful signed photograph.

The American screen & stage actress Dorothy Elizabeth Gish (1898-1968) was also a director and writer. She made her stage debut in the stage adaptation of Ellen Wood's novel "East Lynne" at the tender age of 4. In the Spring of 1912, Mary Pickford introduced Dorothy and her older sister Lillian Gish to the American film director D.W. Griffith who took them on to perform as extras at his Biograph Studios. They so impressed Griffith that he took them to California with him to work on some of the films he was shooting.

The American photographer Fred Hartsook (1876-1930) was the owner of a California Studio chain which was considered by some to be the largest photographic business in the world. Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh and President Woodrow Wilson were among Hartsook's celebrity clients, as well as Mary Pickford who had introduced the Gish sisters to D.W. Griffith.
