About This Item

On board S.S. President Roosevelt, May 4th, 1938., 1938.. Very good. - An original 9 inch high by 7-1/8 inch wide black & white photograph on heavy stock by the S.S. Roosevelt's ship photographer Wm. D. Fink. The image, shot on board ship, portrays the Austro-Hungarian born American actor Paul Muni standing on the ship's deck. Attired in a handsome light colored overcoat and scarf over a three-piece pin-striped suit, the actor stands on the deck with his hands in the coat's pockets and his fedora hanging from the ship's helm. Inscribed in ink by Muni to the ship's Assistant Purser Lt. Franklin E. Peroutka diagonally at lower right of the image "Franklin E. Peroutka. With grateful appreciation and good wishes. Paul Muni 5-4-38". The recipient's first name is smudged. The photographer's credits are stamped at the bottom of the verso: "Wm. D. Fink / Marine photographer / S.S. Pres. Roosevelt / U.S. Lines". There is some minor soiling with browning along the left border. Very good.

Born to a Jewish family in the Austro-Hungarian town of Lemberg, the American actor Paul Muni (1895-1967) spoke Yiddish as his first language. Emigrating to Chicago, he began his career in that city's Yiddish theater before moving on to Broadway. He was signed by Fox in 1929 and was highly praised for his powerful performances which included the title role in "Scarface" and his Academy Award winning Best Actor performance of Louis Pasteur. Muni was a strong supporter of Jewish causes and was on a World tour in 1938 during which he gave a performance in Israel to benefit the Tel Aviv food fund for poor children.
