One of a total edition of 110 copies (including 10 artist's proofs), consisting of ten original etchings (plate size 12.5 x 9.5 cm) by Schwartz, printed on handmade Italia paper by Emiliano Sorini, with each etching signed and numbered in the margin by the artist. A beautiful suite by this notable master of several media, whose other works have illustrated or been accompanied by texts by, among others, Anthony Hecht (PREDATORY BIRDS, Gehenna Press 1958), and Czeslaw Milosz (CATS, Privately Printed 1994).

[ Np], 1907. Quarto. 10.5 x 8.5 inches scant (27 x 21.3 cm) on white stock. Some light foxing to margins, otherwise very good. Matted. An original ink drawing, signed with initials and dated "07," executed as an illustration for Barham's THE INGOLDSBY LEGENDS (1907). An ink note "3 inches high" appears at the lower edge, in ink, in Rackham's hand, and the extreme upper right corner includes some small ink doodles. The verso bears a very rough pencil drawing, presenting a variant on the same image, perhaps executed as a very rough study for the finished drawing. The image depicts two old salts in ragged nautical garb, with the ocean and a cloud- filled sky in the background.

[Probably Big Sur, CA.], no date.. Original watercolor on paper, 19.5 x 21cm, matted. Not examined out of mount, but visible portions a trace tanned, otherwise near fine. A characteristic watercolor, likely painted during the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are shades of blue and black. The painting depicts a male and a female figure, in a bathtub, exposed from mid- chest up. Not signed by Miller, but inscribed by his friend Emil White, who functioned during his Big Sur residence (1944-62) as his aide/secretary in correspondence with painting customers and the public: "This was painted but not signed by H.M. Flamen. fe., lower right corner of plate: Cum privil. Regis XII. Minor foxing to lower margin; small light spot to lower right corner of sheet; very good or better. Albert Flamen was a Flemish etcher, engraver, and painter - active in France in the mid-1600s. Most of his works consisted of series of fish, including the current "Brill" one, birds, and mammals. He also created a set of moralizing emblems (1672) - one of his very few dated works. One copy of the etching located at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

1995. Stuart, Gordon. Water color portrait of the poet, executed in Swansea, Wales, in 1995, signed and dated in the upper right corner. 18-1/2 inches x 14-3/4 inches. Matted and framed. This is one of a series of portraits commissioned from Stuart as the official artist of the U.K. Year of Literature, hosted in Swansea. Ginsberg's visit culminated in a National Poetry Day reading at the Royal Albert Hall marking the thirtieth anniversary of his first appearance there. It was his last visit to the U.K. Stuart, born in Toronto frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy, was shown widely in the U.K., and honored with numerous awards. Five of his works, including his 1953 portrait of Dylan Thomas, are in the National Portrait Gallery, others are in the National Portrait Gallery of Canada, the National Library of Wales, and many other public and private collections. Other writers who sat for him included Margaret Atwood, Seamus Heaney and R.S. Thomas.
