Ruth Adomeit (1910– 96) was a delightful woman, dedicated book collector, and accomplished bibliographer. Her passion was miniature books, most especially miniature Bibles and Bible parts. She was generous to several institutions: The huge bulk of her collection is now at the Lilly Library.
For this miniature book she provides an essay about the Newbery printing firm, the origin and development of miniature Bibles, and the printing of Newbery's 1780 printing of The Bible in miniature, or a concise history of the Old & New Testaments. Tipped in on p. 3 is a leaf from that famous Thumb Bible, the leaf here being pp. 87–88.
The edition of this mini was limited to 125 (unnumbered) copies.
Disbound and Dispersed 168.5 (giving incorrect measurements and pagination). Publisher's brown half-morocco with marbled paper sides. Fine copy.

Joseph Sharpless, No. 4, Franklin-Court, (Market-Street, Between 3rd. and 4th Streets, South Side, Philadelphia, 1813; First American Edition; 223 pages; original leather boards; red morocco title label. Noteworthy Bible History instructional, adapted for the understanding of everyday people and the young. First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. His grandson, Baker Peter Smith, in an 1852 memoir of Sellon reports that he (Sellon) was facetiously referred to by his colleagues as "silver-tongued Sellon" for his ability to bring his hearers to such heights of enthusiasm with his oratory that donations poured in.…

London: G.E. Eyre and W. Spottiswoode [circa 1890s]. (Hardcover) Very good. Diamond 32mo. Volume bound in brown leather with raised bands on the spine, stamped in blind front and back, metal clasp, and metal Star of David (enameled in blue and green and with the letters "IHS" in the center in gold), inner dentelles in gilt. All edges gilt over red, coated brown endpapers. The covers are lightly rubbed, and there is an owner name on the front blank page. Although the book has been well used, it is not badly worn. (Bible, Bible in English).
