1901 Oriental Series Japan China History Art Illustrated Brinkley Korea 12v RARE

Frank Brinkley spent 40 years in Japan and was a military attaché for the British legation circa 1867-1871, then an advisor to the Meiji government and an instructor at the naval gunnery school. He had a deep interest in Japanese art and literature and owned and edited the Japan mail from 1881, which later merged with the Japan Times, and was foreign correspondent of the Times of London.

This 1901 edition of Brinkley's book 'Oriental Series' is illustrated throughout with images of the history of Japan and China including two-fold out color maps!

Pieter de Neyn's "Lust-hof der Huwelyken" is a late 17th-century treatise on the ceremonial customs and rites of weddings and funerals from around the world. Neyn covers numerous cultures including natives of Brazil, Native American Indians, Southern Asia, and India, as well as African tribes. Neyn also gives attention to notable Dutch voyagers including Jan Huyghen van Linschoten.
However, the greatest appeal of this work is Neyn's consideration of the Americas. According to Sabin, this work
"[known as] The Pleasant Matrimonial Garden, treats the following American tribes: Appalachians, Brazilians, Inhabitants of Guiana, Florida, Ingas (i.e. Incas), New-Netherland, New-France, Virginia."

Thomas Thornton was an 18th-century English hunter known for his sporting tours and outdoor sports. Shortly after the French Revolution in 1802, Thornton ventured to France in hopes of obtaining a large French estate. And while the purchase failed, he was befriended by Napoleon
and gained significant knowledge on the landscape, tradition, culture, and hunting history of France.
In 1806 he published a book on his discovery entitled 'A Sporting Tour Through Various Parts of France'. This two volume set includes more than 50 engravings, many folding, of French architecture, hunting supplies, landscapes and chateaus (including Versailles!), as well as illustrated hunting scenes!

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort was a 17th-century botanist who is best known for his work 'Elements of Botany'. In this book, Tournefort made important contributions to botanical nomenclature, identifying the divisions in flowering plants and make distinctions between genus and species. This 1719 Latin edition entitled 'Institutiones rei Herbariae', collects and describes nearly 7,000 different plant species many of which include impressive botanical illustrations.
Included with this volume are letters written and signed by famed French botanists Louis Claude Marie Richard (1754–1821) and his son, Achille Richard (1794–1852). Both were esteemed botanists of their time and taught at the French National Academy of Medicine.
