New York 1943, Oxford Univ. Press, First US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1/4 x 7 1/2, VG/VG- ( dj shows light wear and chipping at extremities & price clipped ), 186 pages, index. Captain Cyril Falls, Military Correspondent of the London Times and author of The Nature o f Modern Warfare, here discusses those elements of strategy, tactics, and logistics by which man has waged warfare since the Stone Age. Contending that consideration of the present war, or any specific war, cannot be divorced from war as a whole, Captain Falls deals with the whole subject of war chiefly in terms of strategy, and with the present war in terms of tactics. In great detail Captain Falls discusses five principles of warfare: concentration, or economy of force; protection; surprise; aggressive reconnaissance, or readiness to fight for information; and the undeviating thrust, sometimes called maintenance of the objective. This discussion leads to a survey of five elements or characteristics of warfare: the moral element; the gambling element; the element of friction; the fog of war; and the diminishing force of the offensive. Although the emphasis of the book is chiefly on land warfare, some space and special attention are also given to naval and air warfare. A final chapter analyzes national leadership and the part it plays in the conduct of war and the plans for peace. Whereas Ordeal by Battle concerns itself with the principles of warfare, the book achieves an immediacy of interest by virtue of the details of military organization, illustrated chiefly by examples from the present war. The importance of this organization, or logistics, on which the conduct of war depends more and more and which is too frequently neglected in technical books, is highlighted dramatically in this war of many fronts and vast distances as it never has been before. Ordeal by Battle is a book which will find wide interest among military men, students, amateur strategists and all who wish to follow the course of the war with an intelligent understanding.
