About This Item

New York: Ballantine Books. Fine with no dust jacket. 1969. First Edition; First Printing. Softcover. First paperback edition of the author's FIRST book. SIGNED by Cormac McCarthy on title page. Fine in mass market-size pictorial printed wrappers. Considering McCarthy's reluctance to sign books, it would seem highly unlikely a fragile paperback of this vintage would turn up signed or inscribed. Yet here it is in virtually pristine condition. (B) ; 4 1/4" X 7"; 198 pages .

Synopsis

The Orchard Keeper is the first novel by the American novelist Cormac McCarthy. Like all McCarthy's fiction, it has been heavily influenced by William Faulkner, probably more so than any of his other works. The novel is set in a small, isolated community in Tennessee, during the inter-war period. It is the story of John Wesley Rattner, a young boy, and Marion Sylder, an outlaw and bootlegger, who has killed Rattner's father, a fact to which both are oblivious.
