Octavo, original polished calf, calf labels, [150], 660 pp. + [ii], 245, [ii] pp. Frontis portrait, engraved title, plates, 1 folding. Denis Petau (1583-1652) was a French Jesuit theologian, and one of the best-known scholars of his age, producing works in the fields of chronology, history, philosophy, polemics, patristics, and the history of Christianity. This work is a summary of a larger work he published in 1628, entitled Tabulae chronolgicae. That work was developed alongside of his vast, but unfinished, De theologicis dogmatibus, the first systematic attempt ever made to treat the development of christiana doctrine from an historical point of view. Very Good; joints are tender, upper label of Volume II is chipped, a bit of scuffing, interiors clean and tight.

In overall very good used condition with only minor signs of age, handling and storage - boards a little rubbed with small chip to leather at spine tail. Binding tight and appears almost unopened. Internally clean, no annotation or inscriptions; gilt page-ends retain lustre, text (Latin), engraved title page and marbled endpapers bright and clear throughout. Photographs available. Wood cut head- and tail-pieces. ESTC, t064635. Bookseller's label on front fixed endpaper for Saml. Hart, Sr., Sign of the Bible, Charleston, S.C. Small white embossed armorial bookplate on front fixed endpaper with motto "Nec temere nec timide." Former owner's name "R.J. Nelson" and Chicago address written on a small piece of paper attached to the front fixed endpaper, probably covering up a previous owner's name. Written at head of title page: "Stephen Elliott 1841." A few marginal notations. In Good Condition: lacking much leather over spine and some from both boards, which are still attached; faint dampstain and light soiling on title page and first pages thereafter; otherwise, clean and tight.
