Padua: Paolo Frambotto,, 1649. His first published work Small quarto (212 x 155 mm). Contemporary vellum over thin paper boards. Woodcut device on title-page, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut illustrations and diagrams, folding engraved plate. Early DSA library ink stamp on title-page and paper shelf label at foot of spine. Front pastedown torn away at centre, marginal browning to endleaves from paste used on turn-ins, first leaf with a few small wormholes, else an excellent copy, generally clean and fresh, the folding plate in fine condition. Third edition of Galileo's first published work, originally privately printed in 1606 in an edition of 60 copies only. The second edition, the first with the plate, was published by Frambotto in 1640. Galileo's compass, invented in Padua in 1597, was a calculating instrument making use of the proportionality between the corresponding sides of two similar triangles, designed for use by soldiers and merchants, which could be used for all sorts of complex calculations, from currency conversion to calculating cannon charge. Digital facsimile (in electronic PDF format on CD-ROM disc; this is not a printed book) of the first edition of this exceptionally rare (fewer than 10 copies known) early work by Galileo Galilei, from a copy in the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection at the Library of Congress. Galileo's "geometrical and military compass" (or sector) was a mathematical device -- a sort of calculating ruler based on the principle of proportional magnitudes -- that brought speed and accuracy to computations about armaments and their trajectories. Its employment, however, extended well beyond the battlefield.
