Folio, a fine engraved title page, pp. (120), 236, (6), 1027, 24, with a fine full page engraving of Bauhin ( engraved by Peter Aubry), over 1000 woodcut illustrations, some age-toning and discoloration, heavy on a few pages (mainly early text pages) but overall a very clean and tight copy internally, original blue speckled edges, half-vellum (probably contemporary ?), titled in ink on spine, rubbed and a little worn, a tear to the spine head, slight wear to the base of the spine, one stab-hole near the lower joint. The Hartland Library copy, with labels on the front endpaper; and probably Sir Frank Crisp's before that. RARE. [Hunt 332. Nissen BBI 1309 . The second edition of the 'Opera' edited by Caspar Bauhin, the final and most complete form of Mattioli's texts. It contains also Mattioli's medical writings, including the most complete edition of the "Commentarii in Dioscoridem", with many notes and additions by Bauhin. Most of the woodcuts have been copied from the small-size pictures of the Venetian editions. [The Hartland Library was formed by the anthropologist and folklorist Edwin Sydney Hartland, and was a diverse, but major, collection of herbals, archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936, and was eventually dispersed around 2010. A manuscript note, and auction catalogue extract, suggests that this was acquired from the Sotheby's sale of Sir Frank Crisp's library, November 9th, 1919. Hartland would still have been actively buying at this point. Crisp had an equally notable library, and a magnificent, if slightly eccentric garden at Friar Park, complete with a six-metre Matterhorn in the rock garden. In 1970 the estate was purchased by the Beatle George Harrison - but this is straying, rather, from the book !!]]. Second edition. Half vellum. Good.

The woodblock plates printed with natural vegetable dyes for true-to-life colors.

Supplements: Vol. 3: 60 plates, Vol. 4: 55 plates.
Condition: pale-blue paper covers slightly worn and grubby, but interior fresh and vibrant. First page in each volume with a large red illegible stamp (two on text pages, two on flower plates). A few plates with white flowers oxidized.
Bairei Kono (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator and art teacher famous for his botanicals and kacho-e (flower and bird) paintings.

Martyn is a pseudonym for William Fordyce Mavor, who authored a wide range of works. The books are set out alphabetically, with the plates reflecting this classification, so they can portray lizards and lynx side by side on the same plate. The pages are double column and unpaginated. The text for each animal is thoughtfully put together eg for the guinea pig 'The Guinea-Pig is a very cleanly creature and totally different from that that affords it a name....Guinea-Pigs repose on their bellies, pretty much in their usual posture...'. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. Robert Kaye Greville, 1794-1866, had medical training but an assured income allowed him to choose a more diverse life in science and art, and in his public work - where he became a leading voice against slavery. He published his Scottish Cryptogamic Flora in monthly parts, intending it to complete the catalogue of flora in Smith and Sowerby's English Botany.
