Published in 1900 by Edwin W. Dayton (NY); states '500 Copies Only Printed' on the copyright page. Matching date on the publication and copyright page indicate a first edition. Includes 27 illustrations. Cracked at the inner front hinge and other cracks forming at the signatures. Maroon hardcover shows significant wear, to include worn-through corners, worn-through spine tail, nicks along the edges, scuffs, smudges and spots on the front and rear. Faded spine. Textblock has a gilt top-edge, an uncut fore-edge, and smudges on the bottom-edge because it is sagging. Front free endpaper is torn out and missing while the rear free endpaper has a tear. Hard creases at the front and rear inner hinges. Inscription on the half-title page reads, there appears to be no other writing. Overall, it is in Good Minus (G-) condition.

Handsomely bound in the original red pebble-grained cloth (imitation leather), with blind-stamped rectangular borders and gilt titles on the front cover and spine. On the cover are gold-stamped images of the sphinx (sphynx) and a pyramid. All gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. Original yellow (silk?) endpapers are a bit speckled but all other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked with NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate.
