Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 2000. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 'Archives' Edition, number IX of XV, of a total edition of 1000, quarto size, 136 pp., with a large portfolio containing numerous specimens from the press, "jeu d'esprit" loosely inserted. The special edition of this Bibliography from The Old Stile Press, presented in a grand box, with a fine assortment of press ephemera, including pages or sections of thirty-eight books printed during 1979-1999, fifteen Christmas cards for the years 1979-1999, handmade papers, early advertisements and experiments, and many other small bits of unique press ephemera. A stunning selection of work from this period, accompanying an illustrated bibliography. Special binding was done by Nesta Rendall Davies, a bookbinder with over 25 years' experience running her own bookbinding and conservation business, as well as teaching.

____DESCRIPTION: Wrap-around pictorial paper over boards in black and white, gilt lettering on the spine, frontispiece a black and white photograph of the McDowalls, each entry full illustrated in black and white, with eight pages of colour photo reproductions on glossy paper; Joanna type, quarto size, measuring 11 3/8" by 8 3/8", [1-3] 4-135 [1 colophon] pp., 'Archives' edition, number IX of XV, so noted in pencil on the paper lining the inset tray holding the book, of a total edition of 1,000. With a pull-out drawer containing a multi-fold blue paper portfolio housing the fifty-five individual pieces of ephemera, this beneath the inset tray, accessible by a green ribbon; all together in a grand fall-down-back box of teal cloth, white paper spine label with grey lettering, lined in illustrated and handmade papers, measuring 16 3/4" by 12 1/2". Tucked into the book is the "jeu d'esprit", "Two Hymns to Pan", an excerpt from "The Faithful Shepherdess", folded twice to form four pages (top edges unopened), printed in red and black, with three illustrations in black, the one on the two middle pages being double-spread; there are also two additional small pieces, one being the single word "If" in deep, bold black letters on a small (4" by 3") piece of white paper, the second being a small note "With the Compliments of The Old Stile Prefs" in black on light grey paper.

___CONDITION: Volume is fine, the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The porfolio containing the ephemera has only a few very short tears at some of the joints; the pieces themselves are fine, clean and without wear, as are the jeu d'esprit and two smaller pieces; the grand outer box fine, strong and sturdy, clean and without wear; the spine label does have one short mark (approximately 3/4" long). Overall a fine presentation of the work of this amazing press, documenting twenty years of fine printing.
