About This Item
Pittsburgh: J.R. Weldin & Co, 1900. Ictavo. . 237 pages. An important account of Pittsburgh especially in the 19th Century when it stood in the shadow of Philadelphia's literary and architectural advances. The slow development of serviceable roads is why Water, Wood and Market Streets were the main part of down town and just a mile further was considered the country suitable for agriculture. Chapman points out how female education emphasized domestic arts Knitting, Flowering, and if some time left "reading English". His account is readable and still a vital source for social historians. Bound in red cloth lettered in gill, spine lettering gilt, previous owner's name dated 1911. A very good copy. [See Howes C-297].
