New York: G.W. Carleton & Co., [1879]., [1879].. Fair. - 12mo, 7-3/8 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, bound in pictorial wraps illustrated and decorated in pastel colors on the front & rear covers, with a list of the titles of the six books in the series printed on the rear cover. The stained & chipped covers are detached and the text block is crudely re-stitched. There are small chips & tears to the edges of the rear cover. [32] pages, including the half-pages. A metamorphosis book consisting of 8 full-page tinted lithographs by William Ludwell Sheppard with a nursery rhyme printed on the verso of each leaf. These pages are interleaved with 8 cropped flaps, measuring 7-3/8 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide illustrated with tinted lithographs on each side. As each flap is turned over, its verso is revealed as the left hand portion of a new illustration. The pages are stained with wear to the corners. The front edge of a few pages are slightly chipped with tiny tears.

A wonderful metamorphosis book designed & printed by Donaldson Brothers, with lithographs by Sheppard illustrating the nursery rhyme of Old Mother Hubbard and her dog, the opening lines of which read: "Old Mother Hubbard, / Went to the cupboard, / To get her poor dog a bone...."
