About This Item

London: Chatto and Windus, 1881. This handsome, complete two-volume set is in Good condition and provides a unique history of the London theatre, particularly the Drury Lane Theatre, throughout most of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Mademoiselle Rachel, Edmund Kean, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, David Garrick, and Charles Dickens all come to life within its pages through perceptive anecdotes. The books have green cloth covers with decorative illustrations in gilt and black, plus gilt spine lettering. There is light spine fading and rubbing at the spine tips and corners. Both volumes had a problem with split center hinges and have been repaired using Brodart's non-acidic hinge tape, where needed, to make the bindings secure again. The author, Edward Stirling, died thirteen years after these volumes were published, on August 14, 1894, at age 87, after a lifetime spent in the theatre. Domestic Media Mail shipping on this set will be adjusted to total $4.75. International buyers should email me for shipping charges. See photo. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
