BINDING/CONDITION: two matching volumes in a slipcase; gray cloth with black and gilt on the spine; both volumes are Near Fine; the slipcase is Very Good+.. 8vo (about 9.5 inches tall) . Appendices, bibliography, index. Description: Both volumes in this set are signed by the author; in the first volume he has also added a personalized inscription. Several black and white illustrations; ten maps are found in Volume One. The following is taken from the blurb on the slipcase: ''On January 5, 1865, twenty-four-year-old Tom Bard, Civil War railroader, debarked from a side-wheeler in San Francisco. Fifty ears later, the Honorable T R Bard, former U S senator from California, was buried in the luxurious garden of his Point Hueneme home. Between these bench marks he had helped to fashion a state from what was only a congeries of counties when he first arrived. He brought in California's first gusher and was a leader in developing its oil industry.'' Author W H Hutchinson was Professor of History at Chico State University in Butte County.
