He was with the first British Army of the Rhine, in Southern Ireland during the IRA activities of the 1920s, in India, the North-West Frontier and Palestine. After World War Two he was eight years Editor-in-Chief of The Sunday Times of Malta, 15 years with the British Army News Service, of which he became Deputy Editor and then Deputy Editor of Soldier Magazine. Since retirement some 17 years of reviewing military books has given him a wide knowledge of military history. His publications include a volume of verses written during the Siege of Malta and a book recollecting that epic three-year siege of 1940-3.
