The publisher's blurb reads: ''It was a hot August afternoon in 1940 when the Italian colony of Baressa awoke from its siesta to the sight of Colonel Lemonfield and the bloodless beginning of British occupation. And so began their happiest days, for under the Colonel's rule Baressa became a paradise, an orderly oasis in the midst of the chaos of war. With wit, satire, and his own unique sense of the grotesque, Gwyn Griffin brings to life Baressa's strange and colorful assortment of characters.'' Griffin's first novel, this was not published in America until after his death (the rear flap of the jacket mentions his death in October, 1967.
