London: Adam & Charles Black, 1967. 427 pp, 9 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w with drawings, reproductions and photographs. "(This book) fills a wide gap in the history of costume, since former books on the subject have concentrated on the fashions of the more leisured classes (a minority) rather than on the clothes worn by people at work. The occupations covered include those of outdoor manual worker, tradesmen, craftsmen, miners, seamen, public and domestic servants. In describing working clothes, the authors show that they gradually evolved from a comparative uniformity in medieval times to a later rich variety related to particular occupations. (An) entertaining book for the general reader as well as a source of historically accurate information for teachers and students of social history, theatrical producers and all interested in the dress of working men and women through the centuries." Chapter headings: Introduction; Worker on the Land; Seamen and Fisherfolk; Miners, Coal Carriers, Navvies; Tradesmen and Craftsmen Part 1 (Carpenters / Paper Caps / Builders / Smiths / Textile Workers / Tailors); Tradesmen and Craftsmen Part 2 (Butchers / Millers, Bakers and Cooks / Liquor Trade / Street Vendors); Household Servants - Men; Household Servants - Women; Transport (Railways / Cabbies and Cads, Bus and Tram Crews); Postal Service and Stage Coaches; Police; Firemen; Miscellaneous Servants of the Public (Dustmen / Chimney-sweeps / Linkboys / Lamplighters / District Messengers / Barbers); Medical Profession (Barber-surgeons / Physicians / Surgeons and Hygiene / Quacks / Apothecaries / Nurses); Evolution of Protective Clothing; Some Special Relations of Clothing to Work (Clothing in Relation to Carrying / Sartorial Symbols / Costume for Advertisement / The Rationale of Irrational Clothes); Bibliography and List of Museums; Souces of Figures; Index. Light browning and some foxing on endpapers - mostly front endpaper, light browning to edges of text block, slight fading to colour of spine and also a very small light stain, very light edge wear, small area of shelf soiling on bottom of text block, slight browning to board edges, scattered tiny water marks on top of text block causing colour fading. Dust jacket is price clipped, has edge browning, edge wear/wrinking with several small tears and chips, protected in a mylar sleeve.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good+/Good.
