First edition in English, first printing, presentation copy from the author to the American actor Samuel Joel "Zero" Mostel (1915-1977), inscribed on the front free endpaper "Para Zero Mostel, con un abrazo de admiracion. Jose Donoso". The novel, the author's best-known work and a major work of magical realism, drawing on the Chilean Imbunche legend, was first published in Spanish in 1970. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Very light crease to spine, else a near-fine copy in near-fine jacket, light creasing around extremities, short closed tear to rear flap.
