Presentation in ink on front wrapper to "Dr. Brush USN with kind regards from the master (?)" This pamphlet edition predates the published issue, which was printed for general release in 1907. At that time Moule also issued A retrospect of sixty years : a paper read at a meeting of the Hangchow Missionary Association.

George Evans Moule (1828-191) ordained in the UK 1851, Began working at the Chekiang Mission Ningpo 1858 ordained Bishop of Mid China 1880. Saw first hand the Taiping Rebellion and the Boxer Rebellion. This pamphlet bears his faint ownership stamp "Geo. R. Brush MD. U.S. Navy Sayville, L.I. N. York". Brush was a ship's doctor for the American Squadron in the China Seas. Brush purchased many pamphlets on his trip to the East and was in the habit of carrying them around with him in his breast pocket, which results in a slight vertical fold in some pamphlets.

Description:
Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, Limited,, 1889. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the front cover, "Dr Brush USN, with best regards from the writer". This detailed pamphlet is scarce: we have traced only three institutional copies (universities of California, Cambridge, and Ottawa). George Evans Moule (1828-1912) was the first Anglican bishop of mid-China. Beginning his missionary work in 1857, he experienced the Taiping siege of Ningbo first hand. In 1864, he was posted to Hangzhou, becoming the first Western missionary to work outside of a treaty port. Among his many scholarly endeavours, he translated the Book of Common Prayer into classical Chinese. Moule's notes on Hangzhou's history and expatriate community were read at a meeting of the Hangzhou Missionary Association in June 1889 and subsequently printed for private circulation. An expanded edition was published commercially in 1907. Provenance: Dr George R. Brush (1836-1894) served in the US Navy during the Civil War as a surgeon and… Read More
