Publisher's decorative stamped brown ribbed cloth hard covers, with gilt titles to spine. Yellow endpapers. Inscribed in the author's hand, on the front free endpaper, as follows: Sarah J. Hale / 1413 Louise Street / Philadelphia / April 6th 1865 / please return." Louise Street was Hale's final residence, until her death in 1879. Four wood engravings (plates) by J. W. Orr, after McLennan. 408pp. Some moderate handling and shelf-wear, soiling and toning to covers; corners bumped and softened. Edges toned; foxing to front and rear leaves, scattered elsewhere. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a lovely sound unrestored copy. .
