The Benevolent Society was founded in 1786, its first president being Goldsbrow Banyar. Its purpose was to afford relief and advice to indigent natives of England and the British Colonies, or to their wives, widows or children in the Cities of New York and Brooklyn. Usually found in green decorated cloth boards. Gilt stamped titles and spine decoration. Top of pages gilt. Inside pastedowns and flyleaves also marbled. Six full page illustrations protected by tissue guards. Not paginated. Previous owners' signature and stamp on the first plain flyleaf, otherwise clean and unmarked internals. Except for slight shelfwear and scuffing of cover edges, in fine condition. Binding is square and tight.
