About This Item

Boston, etc.: Silver, Burdett & Co., 1899. Regular Course" [taken from top of title page]. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good. 4 volumes of "The Normal Review System of Writing. Vertical Copies." handwriting exercise books. 24pp each. 21cm. Staplebound wraps with front cover as title page. Two copies of Number 2, single copies of Numbers 4 & 7. Book Condition(s): Generally very good or better with varying degrees of minor flaws, toning to covers, tiny chips to extremities, ink stains etc. Four handwriting exercise books owned by one Howard Sanborn, who completely fills up, from beginning to end, 2 copies of book number 2, and one copy of book number 4. The same format characterizes each book, with varying emphasis on different handwriting skills. Each page consists of 2 exercises and spaces at the bottom of the page for the student to fill in her name and the date. Howard begins in September, 1896 ( with the first Book 2) and finishes on or about November 23, 1898 (end of Book 4). Book number 7 introduces entire sentence exercises for the first time and after laboring through seven lines of: "Nicotine is a very violent poison." on page 5, Howard apparently just chucks it in for good. A single, final: "Mercury is the only liquid metal." is Howard's final word on the matter, leaving pages 7 - 24 untouched. A nicely preserved set of exercise manuals with wall-to-wall young person's penmanship.
