About This Item
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1934. First American Edition . Orange Cloth. Very Good + Book/Poor Dustjacket. 331 pp. Stated first edition, but actually this is the first printing of the first American edition. Spine a little worn and bumped at top and bottom without fraying. Hinges strong, pages clean internally with very light even aging. Previous owner's name "Read" on FFEP, otherwise clean internally. First issue dustjacket (church and moon on front panel, Dashiel Hammett blurb at bottom of rear panel, not at top, with five titles above) quite worn and torn, roughly taped internally, tape remaining. Front panel shows shows the ancient church, author's name and title (missing "H" in "THE"), with remaining blurb lettering "ew lord peter mystery" beneath; spine has remnants of author's name and little else; back panel chipped at corners, all lettering except two letters clear, both flaps present and complete, with original $2.00 price at bottom of front flap.
Synopsis
The ninth Lord Peter Wimsey novel by Dorothy Sayers. Wimsey tries to solve the murder of an unknown corpse in a quiet country churchyard. The ‘Nine Tailors’ from the title is a reference to nine strokes of a church bell announcing when a man from the village has died. The novel incorporates ‘Change ringing as an integral part of this story. The Nine Tailors is considered by many to be Dorothy Sayers finest literary achievement
