LONDON: B.T.BATSFORD, 1943 Blue Cloth Boards with dark blue titles to spine and upper panel, 220 x 145 mm approx. x + 88 pp. Colour frontis + 10 further monochrome illustrations by Rex Whistler. First Edition 1943.With a preface by Edith Olivier these are the edited diaries of Emma Nightingale, whom Olivier describes as one of those cultivated and "county" old ladies to be met in most villages- supremely interested in local affairs and leading spirit in all local activities and who's godfather was George Du Maurier. She lived in a Derbyshire Village in a modest house put at her disposal by the local squire and in normal times would never have considered taking in paying guests but the outbreak of the Second World War drove her to do so. These are her observations, thoughts and related events during the "occupation" of her house by numerous uniformed and other lodgers. It is also a social history of the time not to be read until after her death. Good /no d/j (Book - sun fade to spine and top margins of boards, moderate shelf wear to cloth, war economy paper to book block. Binding Sound with no previous owner name or insc.)
