New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1955. Hardcover. Very good +/good +. Octavo size, 209 pp. The story of the "unsinkable ship", while tragic in the extreme to all who lived through it - or whose lives were lost - continues to fascinate all, even today, over 100 years after the disaster. The ship sank in only a little over two hours, with, it is estimated, a loss of 1,500 souls - out of the approximately 2,224 who were on board.
Walter Lord's (1917-2002) thorough account of the sinking of the "RMS Titanic", on April 15, 1912, is widely considered an authoritative source of information for the disaster; Lord interviewed over sixty survivors, and weaves history and memoir together in this volume. Lord also served as a creative consultant to film director James Cameron during the making of the hugely successful 1997 film "Titanic".
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter yellow cloth with navy blue cloth boards, dark blue lettering on the spine, endpapers with blueprints of the decks of the "Titanic", two sections of sixteen black-and-white photographs of documents and survivors of the shipwreck in the centre of the book; octavo size (8.5" by 5.75"), pagination: [1-6] 7-209. In a dust jacket with colour illustration wrapping around on the front and rear flaps; the dust jacket is unclipped with the original price of $3.50 on the front flap.
___CONDITION: Volume is better than very good, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and corners, a few stray marks to the yellow cloth, light foxing to the edges of the text block, light toning to the endpapers, and a small spot of soiling to the front flyleaf. The dust jacket is good plus, unclipped, clean with bright colours on the front panel; overall edgewear including some loss to the head and tail of the spine, with some loss of lettering, and the spine is lightly sunned.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
