Pieter van den Keere, 1617. Map. Engraving. Image measures 14.875 x 19.25". Sheet measures 17 x 23.25".<br/> <br/> Beautifully composed map of Friesland, in the Northwestern Netherlands on the North Sea. Includes the West Frisian Islands and many nautical details such as sand banks and polders. The Frisian double lion coat of arms and the Cirksena family coat of arms, a crowned harpy, float above the islands. Dark impression with full margins some minor abrasions on the paper. No text on verso. From van den Keere's "Atlas of the Low Countries", possible separate issue for a composite atlas. David Fabricius (1654-1617) was a cartographer, noted astronomer, and pastor from Frisia. He and his son Johannes were the first to discover sun spots through their pioneering work with telescopes. This map of the region known for having the world tallest inhabitants, is one of a handful of maps that Fabricius made.<br/> <br/>
