This issue features a section called First Jobs in which authors write about their first ever jobs. Franzen's was helping an older couple run a small export business from their dingy basement in St. Louis. He boxed up the stuff they mailed out. I wonder if the older couple he worked for gave him the idea for Alfred and Enid in The Corrections? Other authors writing about their first jobs are Margaret Atwood, Nicholson Baker, John Updike, and Lorrie Moore. Fiction piece by Desmond Barry. Cover by Art Spiegelman. Protected in plastic.
