New York Giants 1905 Baseball Card -

1905. Color baseball card of the leading players of the 1905 New York Giants who won the World Series 4-1 against the Philadelphia Athletics. Here was the pitching staff of Christy Mathewson, Iron Man McGinnity, Red Amers and Luther "Dummy" Taylor. Fred Bowerman was the catcher and Fred Mertes who was the key outfielder. "Dummy" Graham was Deaf and Dumb and this was a nickname he accepted by his fellow players on the Giants but if it was used in derision by an inebriated fan, he could read the lips and punch the offender in the nose. John McGraw who was the manager tells the story of when the umpire refused to call a game when rain was making the field unplayable. Taylor went into the clubhouse and found some deepwater boots and came out on the rain drenched field and pointed to the umpire, he was, of course, tossed and fined $25. This was the year when the hapless Moonlight Graham played only one inning in right field and never got to bat (He was the one of the key figures in the movie "Field of Dreams", who later became a medical doctor and whose heroics were in the field of medicine not as baseball player). The 1905 card is postmarked May 18, 1906 and sent to a Walter Krosterman of Philadelphia. On the verso of the card is the message: "The Maple Leaf is a genuine Baseball fiend, so sends you [Greetings from the Giants].
