FIRST EDITION 1824, approximately 180 x 110 mm, 7 x 4¼ inches, 12 amusing lively hand coloured wood engravings on 6 sheets, printed one side only, pages: (iv), (5)-24, (2), - advert for 52 titles in John Harris's Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction, this being No.50, last page blank. In the original flexible printed buff card wrappers, Harris's pictorial device on lower cover. Wrappers slightly worn on spine, tiny chips and scuffs to corners, small area of slight creasing to upper corner of upper cover, covers dusty and lightly soiled, some pale brown staining to lower cover with show through on inside of cover and faintly on advert sheet. Bold name and date 1831 on inside of upper cover, tiny ink mark offset on facing title page, occasional very small pale mark to margins, otherwise contents clean and bright. A very good copy housed in a red cloth wraparound and enclosed in a Fine sturdy asbestos lined slipcase bound in full red crushed morocco with raised bands and gilt lettering to spine, made by Riviere & Son. The New Year's Feast is a 'versification' of Charles Lamb's 'Rejoicings upon the New Year's Coming of Age' which had first appeared in the London Magazine in January, 1823. According to the short preface, 'The writer thought it might be rendered both amusing and instructive to the young, if cast in a poetic form ... the illustrative Notes are taken chiefly from "Clavis Calendaria" by Brady, and are designed to assist the juvenile capacity in understanding the allusions in the poem.'
