London, J. Rivington and J. Fletcher; A. Linde; and Thomas Pote, 1757.. containing an exact detail of the present field-service: and Particularly the most essential and recent Parts of the Foot-Exercise. With Several Articles never before made Public. The whole translated from the original German manuscript, and illustrated with various representations of the exercise in sixteen copper-plates. FIRST EDITION, 1757. Small 4to, approximately 225 x 170 mm, 8¾ x 6¾ inches, engraved encampment headpiece to dedication to Duke of Marlborough, 16 engraved plates on 15 folding sheets, (plates V & VI on 1 sheet), the number has been omitted by the printer from plate VI. The first 3 plates and plate XVI each have an inserted page of Explanation, that to plate XVI is erroneously numbered Plate IV and inserted wrongly opposite plate IV instead of at page 54, in addition most copies have the 3 leaves of explanation for plates I, II, and III inserted between pages 26 and 27, whereas ours are inserted correctly with those plates before the text of Part I, plate IV is misplaced after the first 3 plates and should be at page 26/27, at the beginning of Part II where it is described in Chapter I. Collated and complete. Pages vii, (1 - Contents), (8 - Explanations), 59, (1), bound in full old calf, modern calf reback, gilt lettered title to spine, original endpapers. Covers and corners slightly worn, 2 names on front endpaper, quite foxed on title, prelim pages and last few pages, foxing throughout, including some plates, mostly to margins, all text legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy but affected by foxing. This work is translated from a German manuscript, apparently a copy of Regulations issued by Frederick the Great some time after 1742. The regulations relate in Part I to Field-Duty for infantry, cavalry and artillery, in Part II to forming battalions, marching, passing a bridge, regiments in action, regulations for artillery when marching. The unknown editor states in his preface that in this work "many Articles of the Prussian Service are made public, which have hitherto been kept secret". See ESTC T112373 and Copac. Not in Spaulding and Karpinski, or the military volume of Sotheby's Catalogue of the Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, Part Ten. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
