Internally, firmly bound, though hinges are slightly strained to the front board. Pages are very clean throughout. Small tear to free endpaper. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, twin fillet border in gilt on front cover and in blind on rear cover, brown coated endpapers, edges untrimmed, binder's ticket of Burn to rear pastedown. Contemporary ownership inscription of one "T. Truman" and later ink inscription to front pastedown. Spine slightly darkened, cloth lightly worn at extremities, lifting slightly on rear cover, front inner hinge partly cracked but firm, contents clean. A very good copy. Smart 13.

Rare with only a handful of examples appearing at auction in the last 80 years. English poet and cultural critic Matthew Arnold published his first book of poetry, The Strayed Reveller, in 1849 and his second volume of poems, Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems in 1852. A sage writer, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1857, and he was the first in this position to deliver his lectures in English rather than in Latin.
