New York: Boni and Liveright, 1927. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Dark blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 235pp. Near fine/good plus. Jacket edgeworn, with spine age toned and some edge chips and expert archival mends on verso -- thus complete and overall fairly attractive. Tight and nice first edition of this (to cite title page) "Encyclopedia of Cultism and Quackery in These United States, with Essays on The Cult of Beauty, The Craze for Reduction, Rejuvenation, Eclecticism, Bread and Dietary Fads, Physical Therapy, and a Forecast as to the Physician of the Future." Not only is the rarely-present jacket present, but this copy is also boldly inscribed and signed by the author in black ink on front flyleaf: "To Mildred Whitcomb / In appreciation of her / helpfulness and a / nice review / Morris Fishbein / 4-7-27." Fishbein (1889-1976) was an influential American physician who appeared on the cover of "Time" magazine (1937) and edited the powerful "Journal of the American Medical Association" (1924-50); he's known for exposing medical foibles and quackery in popular lay reader books such as "The Medical Follies" (1925), this book above "Fads and Quackery in Healing" (1932), and by founding "Medical World News" in 1961. Mildred Whitcomb is remembered for becoming the first woman named editor of an American college daily ("The Daily Iowan") in 1917.
