Original greyish light blue cloth with black lettering spine, white mountain decoration front cover. Original dust jacket has some surface flecking at spine ends, some light crinkle marks upper front, 1cm deep chip loss at tip of upper front flap corner, complete with original price present on flap corner. Biographical portrait of Whymper who made the first ascents of Chimborazo, Cayambe, Antisana, Carihuairazo, Sara Urco, Cotocachi, Sincholagua. He was perhaps best known for his first ascent of the Matterhorn and the ensuing accident on the descent that killed half the party. At the end of his climbing career he travelled to the Canadian Rockies (1901 & 1903) to explore & climb in a publicity capacity for the C.P.R. (one chapter on this in the book). True 1st Edition of this classic mountaineering book. The book contains an inscription from Joe Simpson to his friend, thanking him for for his advice given before the expedition to Siula Grande. The friend's name and address is written inside the book, and the wrapper is price-clipped, presumably by Joe, as the book was given as a gift upon publication. Colour photos.
