About This Item

London: Alex Hogg, 1784 A very good copy in contemporary full calf binding. Originally issued in 60 parts, this work claims to be a comprehensive and accurate picture of Great Britain and Ireland. In reality the work mostly covers England with very small sections on everywhere else. There does not appear to be a definitive collation. There are directions to the binder but these number the contents 1-60, probably reflecting the 60 part issue and are very difficult to relate to the actual maps and scenes. This copy has: frontispiece; engraving to the preface; 2 folding maps of England and Wales; 29 single view plates; 52 double view plates; 4 triple view plates; 4 single page county maps; 12 double county map pages; 2 triple county map pages; 3 quad county map pages; and one page of portraits. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and rebuilding the corners. It is in full calf with an intricate panelled diamond design to the boards, and with raised bands, title label and further diamond patterning to the spine. There is some scuffing and surface damage, particularly to the front board. All page edges are reddened. New endpapers have been added. Contents with frontispiece; title; preface; introduction; text with maps and plates in 5 parts of which Part I is in 4 books and covers most of England; directions to binder; list of subscribers. The publisher's catalogue is not present. The contents are very clean. There is some persistent worming which is present to around p 429. Fortunately the animal(s) have moved vertically so the damage consists of a few tiny holes. Professional paper repair has been done to some of these as well to the bottom corner of the frontispiece and the title, and occasionally elsewhere. P 503 has lost the top of the bottom corner and there is a mispagination - p 252 is numbered 452. The view of Westminster has been strangely bound in the section on Northumberland. Please enquire if you would like to see further images.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
